Lockdown

  • The current state of worldwide lockdown due to Corona Virus pandemic has given everyone a lot of free time, which with little effort, can be utilised well.
  • This is a golden opportunity for everyone, especially the students to upgrade themselves.
  • This is also the time to catch up with the studies and hobbies, that too sitting at home. With some planning, students can turn this lockdown period into a worthwhile learning period.
  • If the school is running online classes, then the academic portion is taken care of.
  • Even for the students of the schools which don’t have an online mode, a number of options exist.

Here are some handy tips from father of two school-going kids.

TIP 1 : DON’T WEAR THEM OUT WITH REPETITIVE WORK

Set Up a Routine. Children get bored with repetitive work. They need to be creatively engaged and setting a routine will help. Entire time should not be spent in studies only, nor in entertainment. Prepare a timetable and set goals.

Prepare a Time Table : Rotate subjects. Language lessons can be read and draft answers can be written down. Best time for studies is from 9 to 12. This will leave enough time for other activities.

Don’t Overdo it. 2 Hours per day for junior classes 1- 7 and 3 hours per day for senior classes 8-12 is recommended.

TIP 2 : GET ORGANISED

Use Internet Wisely. Some parents will say that study material is not available as book shops are closed. However a number of options exist, which can be found with the help of the internet.

Other Options.

  • If you don’t have it, please make use of Whatsapp and other messenger applications or request a neighbour or a friend to do the needful.
  • If one doesn’t have laptop/ desktop, printouts can be taken or the exercises can be simply copied from the phone.
  • Option of getting books from other students is available too. Please make use of the available window during the lockdown to get the books, notes etc.

TIP 3 : REGISTER FOR AN ONLINE COURSE

Each agency is trying to grab the subscriber base and thus quite a few free online courses are available. Sites like Vedantu and BYJU’S are offering free study material including textbooks (both CBSE and ICSE), class notes, exercises and mock tests in pdf format. The same can be downloaded in one sitting. Some of the other sites are Tutor.com, Meritnation.com and Khan Academy Etc. Navigate through each learning site to get what you need.

Download syllabus of each subject first and divide the topics into Easy, Not So Easy and Difficult list.

Ask the students to go through the simpler topics first. This will give a boost to their confidence level.

Get Involved : The language lessons can be studied together. Try it.

TIP 4 : ONLINE PERSONAL TUTOR

A number of free software applications are available for conduct of personalised as well as group tuitions offered by local tutors. Zoom, Skype and similar video calling options are very user friendly.

These cost a little more but provide individual attention to students. As and when the lockdown is called off, the tuitions can continue in the classroom mode.

You can also subscribe to the live video classes. They are being conducted by a number of agencies. The timetable is provided well in advance.

TIP 5 : USE YOUTUBE

  • Youtube is a repository of knowledge but if not used properly, can be a major distraction too.
  • The Youtube lessons are short and make use of innovative tools. One can learn at his/her own pace.
  • Youtube downloader or 4k Downloader can be of great help in downloading and segregating the complete material.
  • The videos can be viewed in offline mode as per the subject. The videos/ links can also be shared via email.
  • Learning on Youtube is Free and Fun.

TIP 6 : MAKE A NOTE OF PROGRESS

Encourage children to prepare separate notebooks for each subject. If not available, notebooks can be prepared by stapling/ binding the unused pages from the previous years’ notebooks.

Maintain a progress chart of each subject. Mark a tick on the syllabus.

Difficult questions can be noted for the contact phase. These can also be sent to the tutors on WhatsApp/ Email for solving.

Remember, there is a restriction on movements and gatherings, not on learning and education. Put some of this time to good use and set the ball rolling for the next academic year.

Wishing you a safe LockDown.
